The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has launched a drive to remove wall writings and hoardings put up by various political parties in public places across the city.

With the model code of conduct coming into force following the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, District Collector Jayashree Muralidharan had asked political parties to remove wall writings and hoardings put up by them within three days, failing which the authorities would remove the same and add the cost to the election expenditure of the respective parties.

Both the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam had painted the city over the past couple of months with wall writings and hoardings. While the AIADMK wall writings and hoardings hailed Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on her recent birthday, the DMK’s were put up in connection party State conference held here last month. However, soon after the conference, the DMK had removed the hoardings though there were wall writings.

Since Saturday, teams of Corporation workers have been fanning out to different parts of the city to erase wall writings by white washing them.

Over the past two days, hoardings and wall writings in 245 places have been removed in the city, official sources said. Nevertheless, a few wall writings still continue to remain especially along the highways. Official sources said the wall writings would be erased over the next few days.

Some of the wall writings were in difficult locations such as the top of flyovers and other buildings. Such defacements would also be cleared, they said.

According to election officials, local bodies were carrying out their task across the district since Saturday.
