Drive to plant one lakh neem saplings

Hindustan Unilever Limited - Hamam, in association with The Hindu group, will launch a drive to plant one lakh neem saplings across 10 coastal districts in the State on Friday.

The initiative, ‘Hamam Green Puthaandu’ powered by The Hindu group, is aimed at growing native species, which are more cyclonic resistant than invasive species. It is aimed at improving the green cover in Chennai and other coastal districts of the State, which were hit by Vardha cyclone.

Neem tree saplings will be planted in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts from April 14 to June 5 (which is World Environment Day).

Thanjavur

In Thanjavur, K. Baskaran, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, will inaugurate the event at Sivagangai Park.

Similarly, S. Ganesh, Collector, Pudukottai, will start the initiative in Pudukottai by planting a sapling at Municipal High School, Kamarajpuram.

Nagapattinam Collector S. Palanisamy will launch the initiative at Municipal Office at Akkaraipettai.

The activity will be inaugurated by S. Ranganathan, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association at Bharathidasan University Constituent Arts and Science College at Nannilam in Thiruvarur district on Friday.
