An earth mover being engaged to clear silt from the Nattu Vaikal near Thiruvanaikovil on Tuesday.

Gearing up for the monsoon, the Tiruchi Corporation has begun removing silt accumulations from some of the major drainage canals in the city.

The exercise is currently under way on the Samba Vaical and Nattu Vaical in Srirangam zone and at the Rettai Vaical in K.Abishekapuram zone using earth movers as the work has to be completed ahead of the monsoon, officials said.

Silt accumulation on the Nattu Vaical is being removed between Thiruvanaikovil and Chennai By-pass Road for a distance of about 1.50 km and on a two km stretch of the Samba Vaical on South Devi Street. The Corporation would be spending about Rs.4 lakh for the work. The canals are being cleared for a width of five metres, Corporation Commissioner M.Vijayalakshmi said in a press release.

Desilting of the Rettai Vaical is under way between Salai Road and Cholarajapuram. Similar works have been taken up Ariyamangalam and Golden Rock zones, Ms.Vijayalakshmi said.
