Inspection was carried out on the second railway line from Solagampatti to Thanjavur on Tuesday.

The second portion of the double line laid in the stretch from Solagampatti to Thanjavur will be commissioned for operation of passenger and freight trains once the statutory clearance is accorded by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bengaluru.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), K.A. Manoharan, carried out detailed inspection on the second line laid from Solagampatti to Thanjavur on Monday and Tuesday.

The two-day inspection concluded with the CRS conducting a high speed trial run from Thanjavur to Solagampatti on Tuesday afternoon. The entire doubling project is from Golden Rock to Thanjavur (48 km) executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.

Accompanied by top officials of Tiruchi Railway Division and RVNL, the CRS travelled in a special train conducting the high speed trial at a speed of 125 km/per hour, said railway sources. The high speed trial was completed in about 20 minutes from Thanjavur to Solagampatti.

The first portion from Golden Rock to Solagampatti (19 km) was commissioned last year for rail traffic after obtaining clearance from the CRS. Railway officials here said that the stretch from Solagampatti to Thanjavur would be thrown open to traffic only after the CRS accords clearance. The officials hope that the clearance would come through soon.

The second railway line was laid as the existing single line from Tiruchi to Thanjavur had got saturated. The commissioning of the second line would reduce delay in the Tiruchi-Thanjavur section due to crossings and pave the way for operation of more trains.
