The Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE) has decided to impart trade skills to at least 12,000 rural youths in the State through the National Service Scheme units of polytechnic colleges.
The decision was made at a regional-level NSS Programme Officers review meeting held at Seshasayee Institute of Technology (SIT) here.
More than 75 NSS officers of the Tiruchi zone, including Tiruchi, Thanjavur, and Pudukottai, took part. The meeting took stock of last year’s achievements and reviewed expenditure incurred for NSS-related works.
S.Sangapillai, principal, SIT, presided over the meeting. V.Seetharaman, Programme Officer, NSS, DOTE, S.Sayeeram, Youth Assistant, NSS Regional Centre, B.Sinthanaiselvan and S.Senthamarai, NSS officers, SIT, were among those present. Mr.Seetharaman said it had been decided to take forward the agenda of imparting trade skills such as coir winding, masonry, motor vehicle repairing, and tailoring to 12,000 rural youths during the current academic year. Besides achieving the target, the NSS programme officers have also been directed to conduct training programme to enhance the employability skill of polytechnic students.
Similarly, a target had been fixed to collect 5,000 units of blood through blood donation camps.
A total of 38,500 NSS volunteers must be enrolled in all polytechnic colleges of the State.
