Don’t insist on bank account while enrolling members: workers' body

The members of the Tiruchi district Kattumana Thozhilalar Sangam affiliated to the CITU staged a demonstration in Mannarpuram in the city on Tuesday in support of their 10-point charter of demands.

The demands include managing the activities of the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board as per the All India Construction Workers Act 1996, not to insist on bank accounts while enrolling members for the board and at the time of renewal, not to compel members to visit the board office , do away with the practice of verification of records by VAO, provision of bonus and compensation to members during the lean season.

They also demanded pension to all the workers who had attained 60 years of age, hiking marriage assistance from Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000, provision of Rs.2 lakh to the kin of workers who are killed in accidents, and Rs.1 lakh to those suffering natural death. P.Poomalai, district president of the sangam, presided. Jayaprakash, State vice president, Construction Workers’ Federation of India, and M.Natarajan, district secretary of the sangam, spoke.
