Doctors should bridge the gap between them and patients by treating them politely and courteously, said S.S.Palani Manickam, Union Minister of State for Finance here on Saturday.

He released a book "Unavum Nala Vazhvum" (Food and healthy life) written by Dr.N.Mohandoss, nephrologist. Thanjai Ramamoorthy, senior advocate received the fist copy. "Doctors should come close to the patients. That itself will give confidence and courage to patients," Mr.Palani Manickam said.

He said that health awareness is lacking among people and books like the ones written by Dr.Mohandoss will help in creating this awareness among common man. Food itself becomes medicine for people ailing from various diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, heart diseases and obesity. "Dr.Mohandoss has prescribed the types of food patients should take. If people follow this they can lead a healthy life" the Minister said.

"It is easy to write poem and novels. But it is difficult to write on technical subjects. For this doctors should have mastery over language in both Tamil and English. Dr.Mohandoss has written so far eleven books including the one released on Saturday on various medical subjects. All will be useful for people" the Minister said.

Thanjai Ramamoorthy said that poet Bharathi wished that all developments in the west should be translated into Tamil. Teaching engineering and medicine in Tamil has been the long cherished goal of the Government. Efforts like this taken by Dr.Mohandos will help in achieving that goal.

Dr.Mohandoss said the Kalaignar's Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatment has saved many poor people who otherwise would not have been able to spend for their costly treatment. "Nearly 30 poor patients with stones in Kidney were treated in my hospital under the insurance scheme" he said.

P.Gowthaman, Publisher, Panbu Nool Veliyeettagan, which brought out the book welcomed the gathering.
