DMK jail bharo agitation: police set to ensure order

City and rural police draft separate security schemes

With the State-wide Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s ‘jail bharo’ agitation scheduled for Wednesday, the police have augmented strength for deployment and got ready other paraphernalia to ensure order. Tiruchi city police and Tiruchi rural police have drafted separate comprehensive security schemes in view of the agitations to be held at several places in the district.

The agitations within the city limits are proposed to be held near the collectorate and Srirangam taluk office. Elsewhere in the district, it is to be organised at Manapparai, Thuraiyur, Musiri, Thottiyam, Manachanallur, Lalgudi and Tiruverumbur, police sources said.

Having mobilised over 1,000 police personnel for the protest, the city police have got additional strength from Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP). Two TSP companies from Avadi and Veerapuram, and one from Tiruchi would also be engaged for bandobust duty on Wednesday.

On the eve of the stir, the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, A. Alexander Mohan, held a meeting with top police officers of Tiruchi Range at District Police Office here on Tuesday to formalise security-related steps to be taken in connection with the agitations.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi Range, A. Amalraj, and Superintendents of Police of Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Pudukottai and Karur participated in the meeting that lasted over two hours.

The police have identified the places where the agitations are to be held and got ready the marriage halls across the Central Zone for lodging the arrested DMK functionaries initially before being sent for remand, said IG Alexander Mohan.

Six companies from TSP would be deployed across the Central Zone of which three companies would be deployed in Thanjavur range and the rest in Tiruchi Range. “We have mobilised our complete police strength and solicited the support of home guards for traffic regulation,” IG Alexander Mohan said. DMK had called for the agitation in the wake of arrest of several party functionaries on various charges.
