Heeding to party high command’s call, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadre staged a demonstration here on Monday urging the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government to immediately implement the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal project.

The demonstration in which party functionaries from various places in the district took part was held near the Khadi Kraft. It was led by the former Minister and DMK district secretary K.N. Nehru.

The demonstrators wanted the AIADMK government to withdraw the affidavit filed in the Supreme Court opposing the Sethusamudram project.

The DMK had called for a state-wide demo on July 8 on this issue and had passed a resolution in the party’s administrative council held earlier.

Raising slogans in support of their demands, the demonstrators said implementation of the Sethusamudram project would substantially improve the livelihood of the people of southern districts of the State and the economy.

They urged the Central government not to delay any further the multicrore project. Former Minister N. Selvaraj, MLA Soundarapandian, former MLAs Anbil Periyasamy, K.N. Sekaran, B. Bharani Kumar and Rani and former Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan and functionaries took part.
