Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate for the Srirangam by-election N. Anand (33) filed his nomination here on Thursday.
Flanked by the former Minister, K.N. Nehru, and Rajya Sabha member Tiruchi N. Siva, Mr. Anand handed over the papers to the Returning Officer and Srirangam Revenue Divisional Officer V. Manoharan.
In his affidavit, Mr. Anand has declared movable assets worth Rs. 23.87 lakh in his name and Rs. 22.10 lakh in his wife’s name. The approximate current market value of the immovable assets in his name was Rs. 6 crore. His spouse has immovable assets worth Rs. 5 lakh. He has liabilities to the extent of Rs.4.89 crore. There was no case against him.
A native of Tiruchi district, Mr. Anand polled 63,480 votes and lost by a margin of 41,848 votes to AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa in the 2011 Assembly election.
In a brief interaction with reporters after filing his papers, Mr. Anand claimed that he had the sympathy of the people of Srirangam.
Mr. Nehru said the ineptitude of the AIADMK government and “raging corruption” in all departments would be the poll plank of his party.
DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin would embark on a campaign in the constituency on February 9, 10 and 11. P. Kathirvel filed his nomination papers before the Returning Officer as the DMK dummy candidate on Thursday.
