Cadre of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) observed day-long fast in the city and elsewhere in the district on Monday to bolster the determination of Tamil Nadu on the Mullaperiyar dam issue.
The State-wide fast was called by the DMK high-command and a resolution in this regard was adopted at the party's executive committee meeting held in Chennai a few days ago.
It was also observed to draw the attention of the Central government on this issue and to echo the fact that Tamils were not subordinates to anyone and would not make anyone subservient.
The fast in the city was held near the Anna Statue in Chinthamani area. It was led by former Transport Minister and the party's Tiruchi district secretary K.N. Nehru. Former Minister N.Selvaraj, former Deputy Mayor M.Anbazhagan, Lalgudi MLA A.Soundarapandian and former MLA Anbil Periyasamy were among others who took part.
The fast held at Thuvakudi was headed by E.Kayambu, DMK chairman of Thuvakudi municipality. In Manapparai, the fast was led by Geetha Michaelraj, party's town secretary. The fast was also held at Thuraiyur.

Cadre of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) sat on a fast demanding the implementation of Supreme Court order of 2006 to raise the height of Mullaperiyar dam to 140 feet.
S.N.M.Ubayathullah, former minister led the agitation.
Similar fasts were organised at Kumbakonam and Pattukottai.
