Taking up cudgels against Tiruchi Corporation and district officials for their alleged failure to fulfil the basic needs of city residents and to expedite various infrastructure projects, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam organised a protest demonstration in the city on Friday.
Sanctioned projects
The party claimed that many of the schemes and projects sanctioned for the city during the previous DMK regime were yet to come to fruition.
Various projects such as the Rs.221.41-crore drinking water supply augmentation scheme, the underground sewage extension project, construction of the check dam across the Cauvery River, construction of the road overbridges at Oyamari Road, Thiruvanaikovil Main Road, Crawford and near the Railway Junction have suffered delays, the party alleged.
Damaged roads
The party accused the Corporation of failing to repair damaged city roads, initiate effective steps to control the mosquito menace in the city and to fill up vacant posts in the civic body.
Cold storage
A proposal on converting Thiruvanaikovil Trunk Road, between Amma Mandapam and Tollgate, has also been put in cold storage.
Former Transport Minister and party district secretary K.N.Nehru, who led the agitation near the Railway Junction, said notwithstanding the “foisting of false cases” by the State government against the DMK office bearers, the party men would continue to fight for the people’s causes.
Former Forest Minister N.Selvaraj, former deputy mayor M.Anbazhagan and other office bearers of the party also participated in the agitation.
The agitators also raised slogans against the State government for its failure to check price rise and hike in price of milk, bus fare and electricity tariff.
