Over 450 DMDK members were arrested at three places in the district when they attempted to stage protests condemning what they described the vindictive attitude of the State government towards party founder Vijayakant.

The party men raised slogans assailing the State government, accusing it of foisting cases on their leader. Nearly 125 party men were arrested in the city, and about 150 at Manapparai.

At Musiri 190 functionaries were arrested. They were all released later in the day.
