A total of 127 differently abled school students under the age of 13 in the district, who recently received the certificate of disability under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), are now being treated for their disability free of cost by the government.

After awarding the students their certificates, Collector Jayashree Muralidharan had discussed with officials the possibility of correcting the problems of the students.

It was then decided that all of them could be treated at government hospitals in the district, according to R. Manoharan, Joint Director of Health Services, Tiruchi.

People working under the SSA scheme would bring the students to the hospitals. “The corrective surgery started yesterday at the government hospital in Srirangam, where three students were treated for different problems. Within 30 to 45 days, all 127 of them would be treated,” said Mr. Manoharan, adding that 75 per cent of the ENT-related surgery would be performed at the government hospitals in Srirangam, Mannaparai, and Musiri, while orthopaedic cases would be treated at Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, and eye disorders at Government Institute of Ophthamlogy, Egmore, Chennai.
