Differently abled children had their day out at the ‘District Games – 2010,' which concluded at the Anna Stadium here on Wednesday. Over 250 children from various parts of the district participated in the two-day tourney conducted in four categories – orthopedically challenged, visually challenged, hearing impaired and mentally challenged. Such meets would improve self confidence of the differently abled children and bring to fore their latent talents, the District Collector T. Soundiah said, honouring prize winners in the presence of the District Differently Abled Welfare Officer R. Shyamala and the District Sports Officer P. Kalaiselvan. “The meet proved a good motivation for the children and would go a long way in instilling confidence among them,” said Ms. Shyamala, District Differently Abled Welfare Officer. Prior to the meet, as many as 50 special educators and volunteers of the district were trained by master trainers J. Paul Deva Sagayam, and Saral Arockiya Mary. This year, Tiruchi was one among the few districts selected in Tamil Nadu for the conduct of the meet under the aegis of the Central Government's scheme of sports and games for the disabled, executed through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
