Voters, whose names have been enrolled in the electoral rolls in more than one place, should immediately apply to get the redundant entry deleted. Or else they would face criminal action, said M. Veerashanmugamoni, poll roll observer, here on Thursday. Just as all the eligible voters have a right to be included in the electoral rolls, they are equally responsible for ensuring that their names are not registered in more than one place. Voters, whenever they shift residence, should get their names deleted from the electoral rolls, and get the same included at the place of new residence, he said at a consultative meeting with all-party representatives and district officials to discuss the summary revision of electoral rolls here.
Calling upon political parties to extend their cooperation to electoral roll revision, Mr. Veerashanmugamoni said all persons attaining the age of 18 on January 1, 2014, are eligible to get their names included in the voters’ list.
Collector Jayashree Muralidharan said only about 30 per cent of the 1.36 lakh youth in the age group of 18 to 19 in the district have enrolled their names in the electoral rolls. In an attempt to change the situation and enrol the youth, applications for inclusion of names have been distributed among all colleges. Complaints on electoral rolls could be lodged with the district administration on 2419929, she said.
Mr. Veerashanmugamoni carried out random checks of the 2,203 applications received online for inclusion of names to verify the details provided by the applicants.
Awareness run
Earlier in the day, school and college students from the city participated in an awareness run intended to sensitise people to the importance of enrolling their names in the voters’ list.
The run, flagged off by Shailesh Kumar Yadav, City Police Commissioner, in the presence of Ms.Muralidharan, began on the Bharathiar Road and culminated at the St.John’s Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School junction.
