The police have established a dedicated traffic control room to deal with traffic-related issues. Necessary paraphernalia has been put in place. A portion within the sprawling police control room has been earmarked for the room.
A separate repeater and bandwidth besides a separate channel has been created. It has been done to enable traffic police communicate with the traffic control room separately, Commissioner of Police A. Arun said.
The room would function from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Personnel who have some knowledge about the traffic patterns in the city have been deputed.
The idea was to deal with traffic related issues such as congestion and ensure free flow of vehicular movements.
Headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), the City Traffic Police unit is split into Traffic North and Traffic South with each one headed by a senior police officer in the rank of a Assistant Commissioner of Police. A separate team of Traffic Inspectors and Constables would work under these officers.
Vehicular movements are heavy in areas including Chathram bus stand and its vicinity, Madurai Road, Central bus stand, Cantonment, Gandhi Market and its vicinity, Woraiyur, Thillai Nagar, Sastri Road, Srirangam and Vayalur Road.
In addition to different types of vehicles plying in the city, a large number of goods carriers and other vehicles pass through the city every day to nearby districts.
The control room would act as the nerve centre to monitor vehicular movements and deal with issues connected with them.
Mr. Arun said efforts were on to create a dedicated toll free number for the exclusive control room.
