The Federation of Consumer and Service Organisations here has appealed to the Collector, who heads the District Road Safety Council, to take steps to check overloading of schoolchildren in autorickshaws.

In the backdrop of the police taking action by issuing notices to autorickshaws found plying with schoolchildren beyond the permitted capacity, the drivers had sought a meeting with the official machinery to settle the issue.

The federation’s convenor, M. Sekaran, in a representation appealed to the Collector to convene a meeting with the autorickshaw drivers to reach an understanding and strictly impose penalty on violators thereafter. Steps should be taken to check overloading in share autorickshaws plying within the city, said Mr. Sekaran, member, District Road Safety Council.

The federation has appealed to the district administration to take steps to provide a median at West Bouleward Road and establish a modern bus shelter at Ibrahim Park bus stop. Road-widening work had resulted in pulling down of the bus shelter at Ibrahim Park and now commuters had to wait on the road under scorching sun.

It wanted the damaged bus shelters at Melapudur and the one in front of the Government Hospital to be rectified.
