Members of All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) undertook a campaign at Woraiyur in the city on Saturday evening highlighting the atrocities against women and children, and demanded steps to end them .
The programme was part of the State-wide campaign launched by the association from August 13 to 17. The campaign aimed to create awareness on protecting girls from sexual assault, to oppose drug addiction, creation of basic primary health facilities in rural areas, more effective steps for eradicating poverty, and ending caste and religious atrocities.
A statement of the AIDWA stated that India ranked fourth among the five countries where women have no protection.
The violence against women has increased manifold since independence. While working women continue to suffer from humiliation at work places, married women are harassed for dowry.
Liquor indirectly plays a major role in violence committed against women. Consumption of liquor has increased and so is the numbers of TASMAC shops.
K.Ayisha, city secretary of the AIDWA, presided over the meet. N.Amirtham, State president, AIDWA, B.Jhansi, State vice president, M.Chitra, president of the city unit, and A.Mallika, district president, spoke.
