Special units of police in Tiruchi are being brought under the scope of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).

Having put in place the IT-enabled system in police stations in districts and police Commissionerates besides at Government Railway Police stations, the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) has now embarked on the task of bringing the special units under the CCTNS in continuation of phase-I. The SCRB is implementing the project in Tamil Nadu.

Computers and printers have been supplied to the special units in Tiruchi such as the Crime Branch – CID, Narcotics Intelligence Bureau – CID, ‘Q’ Branch CID, Prohibition and Enforcement Wing and Civil Supplies CID.

The CCTNS is a mission mode project of the Government of India that aims at automation and networking police stations across the country to facilitate sharing of data.

The Centre has allocated Rs. 113.24 crore for the implementation of the project in Tamil Nadu to cover over 1,400 police stations, special units of police, and offices of higher police officers in phases.

The system would enable the top brass of the police to access details and current status of every case booked in the police station and by the special units in their respective jurisdiction at the click of a mouse.

Profiles of criminals involved in different cases and their modus operandi could be viewed under the system.

Police sources said wiring works would soon be done in the special units of police in Tiruchi prior to getting connectivity from the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, the service provider.

Hands-on training would be imparted to police personnel attached with the special units by the SCRB personnel on the core application software developed under the CCTNS before going “live”.

Sitting in Chennai, the top brass of the police heading the respective special units would know at the click of a mouse the status of a case – whether it was in the UI (under investigation) stage or pending trial and in which judgments had been delivered — once the system is commissioned and networked.

The CCTNS which was at first implemented in Coimbatore city, Ariyalur, Sivaganga and Tiruvallur districts was subsequently expanded to other districts and police commissionerates.

Having covered police stations, the SCRB has initiated the process in the special units in continuation of phase – I, the sources said exuding hope that the CCTNS would go “live” in the special units by June. In Phase- II, the State intelligence wing is proposed to be covered.
