The overall crime rate within the city limit has decreased by 20 per cent in the current year up to November as compared to the corresponding period of 2011, Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav said on Friday.
The property offences rate and the fatalities due to road accidents had reduced by 37 per cent and 16 per cent respectively this year, Mr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav said while speaking at the inauguration of Sessions Court police station here.
Stating that the conviction rate in respect of IPC cases was 60 per cent and 97 per cent with regard to special laws, Mr. Yadav termed it as a good achievement by the city police.
The law enforcers, he said, had accorded primacy to effective maintenance of law and order, crime prevention and prevention of violence in tune with the government’s priority.
The Commissioner said he had instructed the police personnel to be friendly with the people and execute policing on procedural fairness and effectiveness.
The comprehensive plan for expansion of territorial limits of the Commissionerate had been forwarded to the State government, he said adding that a request had been made to provide additional manpower strength in order to have a quick response time to attend to emergencies.
The Sessions Court police station will also have under its jurisdiction the corporation office, collectorate and the combined court complex.
A total number of 30 police personnel had been attached with the Sessions Court police station, he said adding that the ratio of police and public with respect to this station was 1: 1,433.
The Principal District and Sessions Judge P. Velmurugan inaugurated the police station in the presence of Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) S. Selvakumar, senior advocates and city police officers.
