The CPI(M) has condemned the police action against the people who were pressing for service roads on the Tiruchi–Thanjavur National Highway.
In a statement here on Tuesday, S. Sridhar, Secretary of the district unit of the CPI(M), said that the road widening work at Kattur was progressing without provision for service roads.
The employees of various industries situated on this highway, local residents, political parties and other organisations have been demanding service roads to check the increased accident rate.
Many agitations were launched and Transport Minister and the officials assured service roads. But the works have not commenced on this project.
The police instead of convincing the agitating people, resorted to force, injuring many. Mr. Sridhar condemned the lathi-charge.
Lay service roads
The district administration and the State Government should understand the gravity of the situation and come forward to lay service roads from Thuvakudi to Pallpannai junction, in the interest of saving precious lives.
Till then more police personnel should be posted and speed breakers should be erected to check the accidents on this road, he said.
