The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched their poll campaign for the Srirangam bypoll here on Friday seeking support from the electorate.

While the CPI(M) kicked off its campaign in front of the Srirangam Rajagopuram, the BJP commenced it from Tiruvanaikoil. Launching the campaign in support of his party candidate K.Annadurai, CPI(M) politbureau member K.Varadarajan appealed to the Srirangam electorate to show the way for Tamil Nadu and India.

Hitting out at the ruling AIADMK and the DMK, Mr.Varadarajan said both parties were “mired in corruption”. While the AIADMK leader had been convicted in a corruption case, the DMK too was facing corruption charges against it. Appealing to the electorate to shun the two Dravidian parties and prevent the entry of communal forces, Mr.Varadarajan said voters should exercise their franchise for the CPI(M) which always worked for justice and people’s issues.

He said the Tripura Chief Minister and party leader Manik Sarkar and former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyothi Basu showed the way for other politicians in the country by leading a simple life even while holding high office. That was the hallmark of CPI(M) leaders, he added.

Meanwhile, accompanied by Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam Tiruverambur MLA Senthil Kumar, the BJP candidate M. Subramaniam covered different areas in the constituency seeking support for his candidature.
