The basketball court at Anna Stadium in Tiruchi gleams under the newly-installed floodlights. The floodlights, sponsored by Vasan Estates, was declared open recently.

“It is yet another feather in the cap of Anna Stadium which is already equipped with several facilities,” said A. Alexander Mohan, Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, after inaugurating the floodlights. Advising youngsters to take part in sporting activities regularly, Mr. Mohan said that it would help them to keep the mind and body fit. Ravi Murugaiah, chairman, Vasan Estates, said that playing under floodlights was an attractive concept. “It will also enable players to practice late in the evening.”

P. Kalaiselvan, District Sports Officer, felt that it was important for young hoopsters to get used to floodlights under which most of the basketball tournaments are being played these days.

Seven teams – MAM College of Engineering and Technology, Speed Demon Basketball Club, YMCA, BHEL Basketball Club, OFT Basketball Club, Central Zone Police, Armed Police – took part in a Police-Public basketball tournament held in connection with the inauguration. The final between Central Zone Police and Armed Police, inaugurated by Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of Police, was played under the lights in which the former prevailed.

A. Amalraj, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tiruchi Range, R. Lalitha Lakshmi, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi district; C.Jeyabalan, Commandant, Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion, Tiruchi; and A. Kaliyamurthy, former Superintendent of Police, took part.
