Counterfeit notes seized in Tiruchi, four arrested

Sleuths of the Counterfeit Currency Wing (CCW) of the Crime Branch CID seized counterfeit currencies with a face value of Rs. 1.92 lakh here. The confiscated notes were in the Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 denominations.

Four persons, including a habitual offender, were arrested by the CCW personnel on the charge of possessing the counterfeit notes with the alleged intention to circulate them.

The names of the arrested were given as Narayanasamy, a habitual offender of Thozhudur in Cuddalore district, Kandasamy and Chinnakaruppan, both of Madurai district, and Narayanasamy also from Thozhudur in Cuddalore district.

Acting on information, the CCW team held the four near Tiruchi Junction area on Thursday night and seized the currencies in their possession. They had received the notes from a person in Dindigul for circulating them in the open market, police sources said.

As many as 97 counterfeit currencies were in the denomination Rs. 1,000 and the remaining in the Rs. 500 denomination, the sources added. The accused were produced before a Judicial Magistrate court here on Friday and remanded in judicial custody.

A case has been registered against them under IPC sections 489 (b) (using as genuine forged or counterfeit currency) and 489 (c) (possession of forged or counterfeit currency). This is the first seizure in the current year.
