The Tiruchi Corporation has threatened to launch distraint proceedings and disconnect water supply to tax defaulters.
The Corporation has also extended its intensive tax collection drive by another 10 days till March 20. City residents, who fail to pay their property tax and water charge dues by this deadline, would face disconnection of water supply and distraint proceedings, Commissioner T.T.Balsamy has said.
All the Corporation computerised service centres in the four zonal offices and the collection centres at the ward offices at Ariyamangalam, Subramaniapuram, Melakalkandarkottai, K.K.Nagar, Kallar Street and Nandi Kovil Street, Viragupettai Overhead Tank, Woraiyur Sanitary Inspector Office, Edamalaipattipudur Siddha Dispensary Building and the Thevar Hall would function from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. including Saturdays and Sundays till March 20.
Mr.Balsamy told The Hindu that the Corporation had began serving final ‘red corner' notices to assessees who have failed to pay their dues so far.
Each Bill Collector has been assigned five staff each who would serve the notices to the defaulters, he said.
According to figures available in the Corporation website, the civic body has managed to mop up about Rs.18 crore by way of property tax during the current year so far against the collectable demand of about Rs.23.57 crore.
The total property tax collection, including arrears, stood at around Rs.25.30 crore while collection of water charges stood at around Rs.7.33 crore till Wednesday.
