Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has decided to request the government to appoint four land surveyors exclusively for the civic body to avoid delays in carrying out public requests for measurement of land and issuing land records.
Although the city has one land surveyor for each of the four zones, they are now on deputation from the revenue department.
Being effectively under the control of the district revenue authorities, the surveyors are said to be mostly pre-occupied with work assigned by the tahsildar and other higher officials of the district administration, corporation officials say.
This, the officials said, gave room for delays in issuing land records and administrative problems when the surveyors are called upon for some work or other by senior corporation officials.
Surveyors have to attend to requests for measurement of land made by city residents.
They are also required to carry out the measurement for other corporation works such as removal of encroachments.
Taking into account the problem, the corporation recently put up a proposal before the council seeking its approval for requesting the government to sanction the appointment of four land surveyors exclusively for the civic body.
With the council giving its nod for the move, the civic body would soon send in a request to the Director of Land Survey and Records.
Meanwhile, a move to appoint about 421 temporary sanitary workers through a private agency for sanitation works in the city was stalled by the corporation council at its recent meeting.
Faced with a severe shortage of sanitary workers, the civic body had planned to hire the workers for six months through approved private agencies for being deployed for sanitation works in places of public congregation such as Gandhi Market, central and Chathram bus stands, and the five new wards. However, a section of councillors pointing past experiences and the possibility of irregularities stalled the move and deferred a decision on an official resolution on the subject.
