In an effort to improve the efficiency of door-to-door collection of garbage, the Tiruchi City Corporation has decided to allot at least two light weight load carriers for each ward in the city.
To implement the plan, it has planned to procure 85 vehicles at a cost of₹4.5 crore. Each vehicle will cost ₹5.20 lakh. With the placement of order for new vehicles, the number of light weight load carriers will go up to 140 from 55.
N. Ravichandran, Commissioner-cum-Special Officer, told The Hindu that the main idea of procuring small vehicles was to carry garbage to the micro compost yards after collecting domestic waste from households. They would not be used for carrying garbage to long distance destination except for micro compost yards functioning in the respective wards. Each vehicle could carry about 2.5 tonne of garbage. The vehicles would be fully used for assisting the process of disposing the garbage in their respective wards.
It was expected that the company would deliver vehicles within 45 days. Once it received them they would be allotted to wards. It had been planned to hire temporary drivers for operative vehicles.
Mr. Ravichandran said each vehicle would have four persons including a driver. Since it was small in size, it could be driven to lanes and streets so as to enable the workers to collect garbage from households, interior residential colonies, apartments and commercial houses. It would not only ease the work pressure of workers but also complete the task quickly. The vehicles would be operated in morning and evening.
He said the Corporation had 13 micro compost yards in different parts of the district. It had reduced one third of garbage being taken to Ariyamangalam dump yard as the degradable and bio-degradable wastes were processed in micro compost yards.
It had planned to set up micro compost yards in different parts of the city in order to cover all 65 wards within December. If it was implemented, it would enable the Corporation to prevent garbage being taken to Ariyamangalam dump yard.
