Three community health centres and eight new urban primary health centres will be set up in the city under the National Urban Health Mission with financial assistance from the Centre and State governments.
The scheme envisages an urban primary health centre for a population of 50,000 people and a community health centre for a population of 2.50 lakhs for ensuring effective healthcare delivery.
The city with a population of 8.47 lakhs requires 17 urban primary health centres and three community health centres.
As the Tiruchirapalli Corporation is already running nine primary health centres, eight new ones are to be established.
Operation theatre
Each of the community health centre will have 30 beds, a small operation theatre, and blood bank.
While the new primary health centres would be established at a cost of Rs.75 lakhs each, the community health centres would be set up at a cost of 5 crore each, Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani told The Hindu .
Earlier in the day, Mayor A.Jaya chaired a meeting with civic officials to finalise the locations for the primary and community health centres.
The new primary health centres would be set up at Thiruvanaikovil, Bheerangikulam, Ariyamangalam, Mela Kalkandarkottai, Kamaraj Nagar, Edamalaipattipudur, Uyyakondan Thirumalai and Gandhipuram.
The community health centres would come up at Woraiyur, West Boulevard Road and Palakkarai Main Road. According to Mr.Thandapani, all the health centres would be set up at sites owned by the civic body .
