A large number of cadres of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam staged a demonstration near the Railway Junction here on Thursday protesting various shortcomings in civic amenities in the city and alleging corruption in the Tiruchi Corporation.

The agitation was staged in response to the call given by the party general secretary Jayalalithaa to protest the corporation's “failure to provide civic amenities.” The party complained that the corporation has failed to provide clear drinking water to many of the extension areas of the city. The recent clash between two contractors inside the corporation office premises was a pointer to the rampant corruption in the civic body, it alleged.

The agitation was also to demand the dissolution of the Manikandam Panchayat Union Council as its DMK president and Congress vice-president were allegedly engaged in a rivalry and neglecting people's welfare. No development work was being done in the union, the party contended.

The party cadres, including scores of women carrying plastic water pots, participated in the demonstration that was led by D. Jayakumar, MLA. They raised slogans against the Tiruchi Corporation and the State government. The party urban district secretary R. Manoharan, P. Kumar, MP, M. Paranjothi, MLA, J. Srinivasan, AIADMK floor leader in the Tiruchi Corporation Council, and others participated.

Meanwhile, M. Anbazhagan, Deputy Mayor and City Secretary of DMK, criticised the AIADMK leader Jayalilathaa for indulging in a disinformation campaign against the Tiruchi Corporation. Listing out the various development works that were executed over the past four years in the city, Mr.Anbazhagan, in a statement issued here, said over Rs.300 crore worth of works have been completed during the period and works estimated at over Rs.200 crore were currently under execution. A new drinking water supply augmentation city was currently under execution in the city besides various other works, he said.
