The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation has chosen 20 locations in different parts of the city to take up decentralised solid waste management at an estimate of Rs. 9.92 crore.

In the first phase, it will be implemented in four locations, each one in four zones of the corporation on a pilot basis at a cost of Rs. 1.10 crore.

Ambedkar Nagar in ward no. 4 of the Srirangam zone, Pookollai in ward no. 14 of the Ariyamangalam zone, Birds Road in ward no. 44 of Golden Rock zone and Konakarai in ward no. 57 of the G. Abishekapuram zone, are the four locations identified by the corporation to implement the scheme on a pilot basis.

Construction work for providing all the needed facilities for solid waste management had begun in all four locations. A team led by A. Jaya, Mayor, J. Srinivasan, Deputy Mayor, N.S. Prema, Commissioner, and Nagesh, City Engineer, inspected the sites on Tuesday.

Ms. Prema said the civic body had produced organic manure at Ariyamangalam dump yard. Farmers from Keeranur, Pettavaithalai, Kulithalai and Musiri used to visit Ariyamangalam to buy manure.

However, the production was halted particularly after the usage of plastics had increased among the people.

It had been decided to restart the process of producing organic manure from the garbage.

However, instead of a centralised location, it would be implemented in 20 locations. Each location would cover an average of 2500 households.

She said each centre would have facilities for segregation of perishable and non-perishable waste, safe disposal of degradable and non-degradable items.

The degradable and perishable waste would be used for producing organic manure. Plastics would be shredded so as to be used for road laying.

Based on the success of pilot project, it would be extended to other locations.

Ms. Prema said it was estimated that it would cost Rs. 9.92 crore for implementing the project in 20 locations.

It would be sent to the Government for approval. However, there would be no problem for implementing the scheme on a pilot project.
