August 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:00 am IST - SALEM:

The City Municipal Corporation has awarded the contract to two private companies to establish four green parks at Rs. 1.93 crore in the city.

Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), the Corporation had proposed to establish the parks at Ashok Nagar (ward 3) in Suramangalam Zone at Rs. 35.60 lakh, Sona Nagar (ward 5) in Hasthampatti Zone at Rs. 41.60 lakh, S.K. Township (ward 9) area in Ammapet zone at Rs. 51.26 lakh and at Kanchi Nagar (ward 60) in Kondalampatti Zone at Rs. 65 lakh.

The funding pattern for the parks would be 50 per cent grant by the Central Government (Rs. 96.73 lakh), 20 per cent grant by the State Government (Rs. 38.69 lakh) and 30 per cent by the Corporation (Rs. 58.04 lakh).

Tenders were floated and Salem-based companies submitted their bids.

A company quoted the lowest bid of Rs. 31.35 lakh and Rs. 36.05 lakh for establishing the park in Ashok Nagar and at Sona Nagar respectively. Likewise, another company submitted the lowest bid of Rs. 50.91 lakh and Rs. 62.96 lakh respectively for establishing the parks in S.K. Township and at Kanchi Nagar.

The Corporation officials said that the two companies were asked to reduce their bidding price.

But both the companies refused to reduce the bidding price citing increase in labour cost and construction materials.

Considering the urgency in the work, the Corporation decided to handover the work order to these two companies to establish the parks.

They were asked to complete the work in 180 days, the officials said.
