The Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers Union has urged the state government to convene the tripartite committee meeting for active functioning of the construction workers welfare board.
A resolution adopted to this effect at the state general body meeting held here on Friday referred to the constitution of the committee comprising representatives of union leaders, builders and officials for resolving various petitions of the members. Non-convening of the committee has been delaying the expeditious process of the petitions.
The resolution also referred to the denial of permission for the union leaders to present the cases of the aggrieved members. Pleading for protection of the labourers’ interests, the meeting adopted a resolution urging Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to immediately convene the tripartite meeting.
Another resolution referred to the procedure for submission of community certificate as a pre-requisite for enrolment of new members and renewal of existing members. Stating that the members were being enrolled above caste based differences, the resolution urged the state government to dispense with the norms on providing community certificate, bank account and other certificates not related to the welfare measures.
The meeting by another resolution expressed its concern over its serious delay in sanctioning relief such as pension, death relief, maternity assistance and other benefits to the members for a prolonged period. Non-filling up of vacant posts is one of the reasons for the delay in processing the petitions by the board, the resolution said.
In support of these demands, the members would submit a memorandum to the labour commissioner in Chennai on October 30.
N. Periasamy, former MLA and state president of the Union, presided over the meeting. N. Selvaraj, deputy general secretary, R. Balakrishnan, state treasurer, K. Suresh, Tiruchi district president of the Union and others participated.
