A group of conservation activists of the city has floated a new forum, Society for Conservation of Nature (SOFCON), to raise awareness of conservation, and protection of environment and natural resources.
Apart from general awareness programme, the forum will target students to sensitise them to the need for conservation of natural resources through special programmes at schools and colleges.
The forum also plans to organise periodic exposure visits to forests, sanctuaries, national parks, tiger reserves, and other eco systems.
The forum will work in coordination with government agencies such as Tiruchi Corporation, Forest and Public Works departments, and TN Pollution Control Board in raising awareness of environmental management and nature conservation.
Sensitisation
Sensitisation programmes against the use of non-degradable plastics and greening drives are also planned. Residents of the city from all walks of life can join the forum, said V.Sundararaju, former District Forest Officer and president of SOFCON.
Inaugurating the forum, K.Balamurugan, Regional Passport Officer, Tiruchi, said it was essential to avoid unnecessary intervention with the nature in order to conserve it.
The forum, he hoped, would meet the felt need for sensitising students to nature conservation.
N.Satheesh, Divisional Forest Officer, said it was the duty of all citizens to protect forests, which are essential natural life support systems.
R.Khader Mohideen, principal, and Nizamudeen, correspondent and secretary, Jamal Mohamed College, offered felicitations.
Sudhakar Chellaiyah, secretary, and M.Badrinarayanan, EC member, SOFCON, spoke.
