The plea was made by the Agriculturists’ Wing of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee

The Agriculturists’ Wing of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee has appealed to all the Congress MPs from the State to call on the Prime Minister at the earliest to press him for gazetting the Final Award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

In a statement here, Puliyur R.Nagarajan, State vice president of the unit, pointed out that this was the request of the joint meeting of various Cauvery farmers’ associations held here on Sunday for which DMK president and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi responded the very next day and issued a statement urging the Prime Minister to do so.

“For this, all the farmers dependent on the Cauvery are extremely grateful to him,” he added.

And subsequently, the DMK MPs called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Mr.Nagarajan expressed his gratitude to Union Minister for Shipping G.K.Vasan who has been expressing solidarity with the delta farmers.

Both the Central and the State government should declare the delta districts as “disaster-hit” and grant a compensation of Rs.40,000 per acre, he pleaded.

Besides, apart from granting substantial solatium to the families of the three farmers who are alleged to have committed suicide because of the crop loss, one of their family members should be given government job on compassionate grounds.
