Work on the first phase of the by-pass road here will be completed by March next year. The work started in February this year, is being executed at an estimate of Rs.12.40 crore, sanctioned under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development scheme, to a length of about 5.25 kilometre.

Official sources said the work involved construction of 18 minor culverts in the area. Work on 11 culverts has been taken up and is in full swing. The total length of the by-pass road is nine km, which stretches from the outskirts of the town from the Tiruchi–Chennai National Highway near the Regional Transport Office to the Thanjavur road near the Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College. The first phase would be carried out between the national highway and Koneripalayam village while in the second phase the stretch between Koneripalayam and Thuraiyur road would be covered.

Collector Darez Ahmed advised the officials to ensure its expeditious completion. M. Mani, divisional engineer, highways department, explained the work taken up in the first phase to the Collector. The Collector inspected the construction of a bridge at a cost of Rs. 4.13 crore across the Kallar on V. Kalathur–Kaikalathur road.
