They will sensitise people to dangers of open defecation

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation would soon rope in the services of community groups to strengthen its mosquito control operations in the city, Corporation Commissioner V.P. Thandapani has said.

Speaking at a consultative meeting with officials and community organisers here on Friday, Mr. Thandapani said the groups would be deployed in carrying out the anti-mosquito initiatives of the civic body at all streets in their respective areas.

Green cover

They would be engaged to improve the city’s green cover and 200 tree saplings would be planted in each of the wards through the groups. The groups would be given incentive for tending the trees.

The groups would be involved in sensitising people against open defecation and maintenance of public toilets. There were about 385 public toilets in the city and electricity charges for the toilets maintained by the groups will be paid by the corporation.

The civic body would strive for the economic development of the groups, he said and urged nodal officials nominated for each ward should take steps to form the groups immediately.

City Health Officer Mariappan and representatives of voluntary organisations attended the meeting.
