Collector warns action against exploitation by brick producers

October 14, 2010 07:36 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 05:22 am IST - ARIYALUR:

With the implementation of the Kalaignar housing scheme gaining momentum, the prices of bricks has been soaring up in a few places in the district.

Non-availability or shortage of bricks has forced the officials to slow down the programme in a few village panchayats.

To check any exploitation by the brick-kiln owners, the district administration has chalked out a programme, in order to ensure both an uninterrupted supply of this raw material for effective implementation of the scheme and to regulate the sale of bricks.

The Collector, T. K. Ponnusamy, who visited a number of village panchayats where the scheme is being implemented, said that the sale price per brick had been fixed at Rs. 2.50 paise in Ariyalur taluk and at Rs.2.75 paise in Sendurai and Jayamkondam taluks.

Stern action would be taken against brick-kiln owners found selling bricks over and above the mentioned price, the Collector said in a release issued here on Thursday.

He has also advised the Makkal Nala Paniyalargal to sensitise the brick producers on the importance of the scheme so as to benefit the economically weaker sections.

A total of 8,515 huts would be converted into pucca houses in the district in a period of six years, the Collector said.
