Tense moments prevailed at Kanjanaickenpatti village near Thuvarankurichi on Sunday night after a clash broke out between two groups over proposed construction of a concrete building on a natham poromboke land. Eight persons were injured in the brawl.

The arrest of two persons, on receipt of a complaint preferred, as a sequel to the clash between the warring parties triggered a protest on Monday morning.

A section of villagers gheraoed the Thuvarankurichi police station and staged a road roko on the Thuvarankurichi – Manapparai road demanding the release of the arrested persons besides allegedly assaulting a police Inspector.

On receipt of information, a striking force police team armed with lathis that descended on the spot chased away the protestors triggering tension in the area.

Police sources said the brawl between two groups arose over construction of a new building on a natham poromboke land adjoining a temple. This was opposed by one group leading to a wordy duel and scuffle thereafter with eight persons sustaining injuries. On separate complaints lodged by the two groups, the Thuvarankurichi police booked cases.

Three persons including Vadivel, a prominent person of the village, were arrested. On hearing this, a group of villagers gheraoed the police station demanding the release of Vadivel and another person and staged a road roko.

Even as talks with the police were on, a group allegedly assaulted a police inspector who was later admitted to the Tiruchi Government Hospital, the sources said.

The sources said 28 persons had been detained on the charge of assaulting the police inspector. A separate case has been registered in this connection.
