Students and institutions hailed the country’s space scientists on the successful launch of Mangalyaan into the Mars orbit on Wednesday.

No sooner the news about the successful entry of the satellite, students, and science teachers of Jegan Matha Matriculation Higher Secondary School in K.K. Nagar in the city congratulated the Indian Space Research Organisation.

Standing around a Rangoli painting depicting the satellite entering the Mars planet, students of classes 6, 7, and 9 expressed their joy and pleasure on the occasion.

“We have been closely following-up the progress of the satellite right from its launch a year ago,” says E. Krithika, a science teacher who has been guiding the students on the significance of the space science in general and the Mangalyaan in particular.

Fr. Sahayaraj, correspondent of the school, said they had anticipated the success of the ISRO mission as they were following its launch.

“In fact, we held a special seminar on the launch of the mission a year ago,” he said.

The science teachers had been keeping a follow-up on the launch and keeping the students updated.

The mission had served as an inspiration for students to take up science research, he added.

In Pudukottai, members of the Thulir Illam took out a procession in the town to mark the success of the mission.

They distributed pamphlets and sweets on the significance of the mission.

“The achievement will enable people to understand the scientific truth about space,” said A. Manavalan, district president of the Tamil Nadu Science Forum, and M. Veeramuthu, district secretary of the forum. They urged the Centre to encourage space research by allocating more funds.
