CII to hold banana fest

May 04, 2013 12:41 pm | Updated July 05, 2016 03:44 pm IST - TIRUCHI:

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) would conduct one of the three banana exhibitions it has planned in Tamil Nadu at Tiruchi. The other two exhibitions would be at Gobichettipalayam and Tuticorin.

The support of the National Research Centre for Banana in Tiruchi would be sought to organise the event and establish a mechanism for farmers to get right returns for their produce, Narayan Sethuramon, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu, and Rani Muralidharan, Chairperson, Tiruchi Zone, told media persons on Friday. The scope for branding banana for better returns will be explored, Ms. Rani Muralitharan said.

According to agricultural statistics, out of Tamil Nadu’s annual production of 8.5 million tonnes of banana, accounting for about one-third of the country’s production, only a fraction is processed and exported.

The CII started organising the festival last year as a platform for farmers, industry representatives, cold chain infrastructure providers, and traders to come together to identify business opportunities and infrastructure gaps, and the ways to address these issues.

To showcase the region’s status as a fabrication hub for energy equipment components, the CII’s Tiruchi Zone will organise its next edition of Energex with focus on renewable energy as well.

The potential of fabrication industries in Tiruchi region to manufacture components for solar power, wind power and bio-energy generation equipment will be showcased, Ms. Rani Muralidharan said, informing that the CII has requested the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency for major support to organise Energex.
