The character of a child is decided more by its environment, apart from the behaviour of its caretakers.

A scientific approach should be followed while handling children, said Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of Police.

Speaking at the inaugural of the day long skill development programme for the city police personnel on “child rights and protection” organised by the District Child Protection Unit here on Wednesday, the Commissioner underlined the role of police personnel in ensuring the children’s protection.

The society should understand its responsibility in grooming children and extending adequate protection to them. A strange and peculiar behaviour of a few parents had an adverse impact on the children’s attitude, he said.

He appealed to the police personnel to exercise vigil against cases involving kidnap of children and atrocities and crimes being inflicted on them. Child’s protection should be the ultimate goal at every circumstance, Mr. Yadav said.

K. Priyadharshini, social worker; R. Devika, District Child Protection Officer, spoke on the various acts and laws guaranteeing protection to the children.

Sankari, member, Child Welfare Committee, and Sivakumar, advocate, imparted the training at the sessions that followed.

Abhinav Kumar and Jayandhi, both Deputy Commissioners of Police, were present. More than 80 police personnel belonging to the anti-trafficking wing of the city police participated in the training programme.

N. Subbaiyan, Thanjavur District Collector, inaugurated a similar skill development training programme organised by the Thanjavur district unit of Child Protection unit at Sangeetha Mahal, Palace Complex on Wednesday.

He said the crime against women and children was on the rise, causing disturbance to civil society.

With the responsibility of protecting women and child rights assuming a greater proportion, the government in coordination with the service organisations had evolved various social schemes to protect women and children.

The Collector appealed to the service organisations to register their organisations and private homes so as to regulate their services within the ambit rules in force.

The objective of the day’s programme was to streamline the functioning of the service organisations working for the cause of women and children.

These service organisations should keep a vigil against child marriage and work hard in the cause of elimination of child labour. These organisations should exercise caution against child trafficking and crime against children.

Similar training skill development training programmes will be held in the district throughout the week.
