A large number of school students took out an awareness bi-cycle rally to mark the observation of World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse here on Wednesday.

The campaign was organised jointly by Childline-1098 and the Sakthi Rotary Club of Tiruchi.

Starting from St. John Vestry Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary, they passed through the thoroughfares before reaching the Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School at Teppakulam.

Earlier, flagging off the rally, S. Usha, District Social Welfare Officer, said that child marriage was a social evil and sought the cooperation of the public to stand united against the practice.

Allirani Balaji, president of the club, said that the awareness programme aimed at protecting child’s rights, including guaranteeing education and dignity. Students’ participation would go a long way in sensitising the masses to the significance of the observance of the day, she added.

Sr. Maria Kamalam, Director of SOC SEAD, J. Godwin Premsingh, Director of Childline, were present.
