Criticising Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram for failing to prevent the serial blasts in Mumbai, Communist Party of India (CPI) Rajya Sabha MP and the party's national secretary D. Raja on Saturday claimed that Mr. Chidambaram's internal security strategy had not proved to be successful.

Mr. Chidambaram is efficient in rhetoric but not effective in his actions as Home Minister in charge of internal security, Mr. Raja charged. Addressing the media here, Mr. Raja said internal security remained a question mark ever since Mr. Chidambaram became the Home Minister.

Despite having a National Security Advisor and a National Investigating Agency in place, disturbing incidents like the one that took place in Mumbai could not be averted, he said. Whether in tackling terrorism or Left Wing extremists, the actions of the Home Minister had been ineffective, he said.

Stating that the Home Minister's position had become increasingly untenable, Mr. Raja said “he (Chidambaram) has to go”. The CPI would see the way the Prime Minister was going to act. If the Prime Minister does not act, the CPI would take up the issue inside and outside the Parliament, Mr. Raja said.

Claiming that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was drifting and dithering on every issue, Mr. Raja alleged that the Centre had become a tool of corporate entities. The UPA government had deviated from welfare policies, he said, while charging the Centre with protecting the interests of the corporates.

The UPA government which failed to control inflation and price rise lacks moral and political authority, he said. The CPI in association with other Left parties had launched a nation-wide movement against corruption, he said. The CPI favoured bringing the Prime Minister under the Lok Pal's ambit, he added.
