Certificates of 137 candidates who have cleared the TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) in central districts were verified at the E.R. Higher Secondary School on Friday under the supervision of the Chief Educational Officer K. Selvakumar.
On Saturday, the certificates of 367 candidates will be verified, official sources said. Out of nearly six lakh candidates, only less than 2,500 could secure a pass in the TET conducted by the Teachers’ Recruitment Board for the first time for primary and upper primary teachers, as mandated under the Right to Education Act.
According to official figures, 2,83,806 secondary grade teachers (handling classes 1 to V) and 3,83,616 graduate teachers appeared for the examination all over Tamil Nadu. About 28,800 candidates took up the examination in Tiruchi district.
In the interests of children, and to fill vacancies in a time-bound way, the State Government directed the TRB to conduct re-examination on October 3 for candidates who could not secure above 60 per cent.
According to MHRD, the TET is a minimum qualification for appointment as teacher for bringing national standards and benchmarking quality of teachers in the recruitment process. As per the guidelines of National Council for Teacher Education, teachers working in unaided schools must also secure a pass in the teacher eligibility test within five years.
Teachers Eligibility Test is only a pre-requisite eligibility test for those seeking appointment as teacher.
