A jubilant mood and an excited atmosphere prevailed at Bharathidasan University during the valediction of the annual BDU Fest 2013 that was held on the university campus on Sunday.
Cauvery College for Women bagged the overall championship trophy by emerging victorious in a plethora of competitions. The overall championship runners-up trophy went to the students of Holy Cross College.
The overall music championship trophy was awarded to Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College, Tiruvanaikovil; overall dance champions were students of Holy Cross College; overall theatre championship trophy went to Thanthai Hans Roever College, Perambalur; overall literary champions were students of Cauvery College for Women; and overall fine arts championship trophy was given away to Government College of Fine Arts, Kumbakonam.
“The objective of education is to preserve arts, culture, and tradition of the country, and to transfer it to the next generation. Such cultural festivals help in doing that,” said S. Subbaiah, member, University Vice Chancellor Committee. He added that learning and practising art forms teach youth obedience and discipline.
About 30 competitions in four different categories were conducted during the three-day festival, and a total of 1,197 students, including 710 women, from 42 colleges in Tiruchi and neighbouring districts participated. The event was held from January 10 to 12.
In the music category, competitions were classical vocal solo, classical instrumental solo, light vocal Indian solo, western vocal solo, group song (Indian and Western), folk orchestra, and folk song solo. Folk dance (group) and classical dance solo competitions were held in the dance category. The literary category features competitions on quiz, elocution (Tamil and English), debate, and poetry writing (Tamil). The theatre category has one act play, skits, mime, mimicry, variety entertainment, on-the-spot painting, collage, poster making, clay modelling, cartooning, rangoli, spot photography, and installation.
