A police team seized Rs. 3 lakh in cash from a car at a check post here on Wednesday.
The team was conducting vehicle checks at Karumandapam check post on the Tiruchi - Dindigul national highway when they stopped a car that entered the city from Dindigul.
The team found a bag inside containing cash for which the occupants did not possess proper documents to specify the purpose for which it was being carried, police sources said.
The cash and the occupants were immediately brought to the Cantonment police station where the law enforcers conducted enquiries as the model code of conduct was in place for the upcoming by-election to the Tiruchi West assembly constituency.
The sources said one of the occupants M. Kanagaraj, of Vedapatti in Tuticorin district, had told the police that the money was being taken to be given as advance for the purchase of a lorry. The money and the vehicle were returned back after the occupants produced relevant documents before the Income Tax and the revenue officials, the sources added.
A few days ago, a video surveillance team seized around 34 kilograms of gold jewellery and over Rs. 40 lakhs cash from a car while conducting vehicle checks at the same check post in view of the by-poll.
