In separate incidents, police personnel seized cash amounting to over Rs. 6 lakh at various checks posts falling within the city limits on Thursday in the run up to the by-election to the Tiruchi West Assembly constituency.

A police team was conducting checks at the Karumandapam check post on the Tiruchi–Dindigul national highway when they stopped a car bound for Tiruchi from Palani. Cash amounting to Rs. 4 lakh was found inside the vehicle, police sources said adding that since the occupant Subramani had no documents in his possession the money was seized and later handed over to the Income Tax department.

Subramani reportedly told the police that the cash was being carried for business transactions.

In another incident, police seized one lakh in cash from a car while conducting vehicle checks at Kudamuritti check post on the Tiruchi – Karur national highway. The occupant of the vehicle was a financier of Karur and was proceeding to Aranthangi to provide finance to a person of that town for purchase of a vehicle.

The sources said the seized cash was handed over to the Income Tax department as the occupant did not carry valid documents. The money was released later after necessary documents were produced.

Cash amounting to Rs. 1.68 lakh was seized from a two-wheeler rider at Airport check post on the Tiruchi – Pudukottai national highway in the early hours. The two-wheeler rider Rajendran was proceeding to Mudhukulathur in Ramanathapuram district from Chennai when the police personnel stopped him at the check post.

The sources said Rajendran had told the police that the cash was being carried for a family function.

The cash was seized since he had no documents in his possession at that time. The cash was released after he produced the supporting documents later.
