A “Semmozhi Poonga” was established at the Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute here recently with the college students taking up a mass tree plantation programme. Saplings of various species were planted at the institution to spruce up green cover inside the campus.

District Forest Officer D. Mani inaugurated the programme in the presence of Institute Dean G. Kathiresan and staff members. Highlighting the contribution of the Tamil race in planting tree saplings in ancient times, Mr. Mani said trees played a very crucial role in checking pollution.

Climate change was a great challenge today, he said adding that deforestation was the second leading contributor of carbon emissions worldwide after burning of fossil fuels.
