Cameras to keep tab at central bus stand and commercial spots

Cabling work under way and cameras expected to be commissioned in August first week

The bustling Central Bus Stand and its vicinity and the prime commercial areas in the city are to be brought under closer watch with the installation of a chain of surveillance cameras.

The exercise of installing advanced infra-red cameras at vital points at the central bus stand has already commenced. A private agency has been entrusted with the task of installing and maintaining the cameras at chosen locations to enhance surveillance.

Sources said in addition to Central Bus Stand and its vicinity, the cameras were also being installed along the Thillai Nagar Main Road, Big Bazaar Street, Chinna Kadai Veedhi and NSB Road dotted with commercial establishments besides along the stretch from Head Post Office Junction to MGR statue in Cantonment area.

Around 24 cameras are to be installed at central bus stand and its vicinity up to Tiruchi railway junction area alone to keep a round-the-clock watch on the movements taking place at the spot.

The movements would be watched from the police outpost at the bus stand where monitors connected to the cameras would be installed.

Around 20 cameras would come up at Big Bazaar Street, Chinna Kadai Veedhi and NSB Road – the business nerve centre of the city.

The activities taking place along Thillai Nagar Main road would be monitored from a house in that area, while the police outpost opposite the Rockfort Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple would be the spot from where the activities taking place at the business centres would be closely monitored.

The movements along the stretch from Head Post Office to MGR statue would be monitored from a commercial complex at Othakadai.

Each one of the monitoring rooms would also be equipped with public address system to convey information to public from time-to-time, said the sources.

Around 80 surveillance cameras would be installed in all at the chosen locations. Cabling works were underway and the cameras were expected to be commissioned in August first week, said the sources.

Infra red cameras would enable generation of clear footages even during night hours.

The cameras with provision of recording would enable the law enforcers to sift through the video footages as and when required as part of their investigation.

Technical team

A technical team of the private agency would render assistance in the maintenance of the cameras. The monitoring rooms would have police personnel and representatives of the agency.

A few days ago, the Chathram bus stand was brought under the scope of surveillance cameras-based monitoring mechanism. Surveillance cameras would provide crucial inputs to investigators in eventually cracking cases, said the sources.
